This idea of mixing two to three oils together is not a new concept. In fact, it is widely believed that blending oils may enhance their individual benefits.
When I think about blending oils together it makes me smile. I have my favorite oils like lavender, sage and lemon. With a little bit of creativity, you can blend some wonderful oil combinations that you and your family will hopefully love.
For me, the best thing about blending oils is that you can make combinations that smell good to you. For instance, I like to blend lavender and chamomile for rest and sleep. I will include some recipes at the end of this article.
I want to give you all a chance to try some of these recipes and let me know what worked for you. I also encourage you to make your own blends and share them. One of the things I need to say is that whenever you blend oils, you will want to do so in some type of carrier oil.

Medicinal Uses of Blends
One of the questions you may be asking right now is what are the medicinal benefits?
To be honest, aside from combining the oils to enhance their intrinsic medicinal uses there are not many other medicinal uses of blending oils. Now before you go running out and saying “but this is a medical site, why are there no medicinal benefits?” I did not say there were none it is more accurate to say that there are no studies to show the benefits of blending. It does make things like this a bit more difficult to write about, but it doesn’t mean there are not great benefits.
Blending Oils: Recipes
Now I want to share some recipes with you. These are simple blends that you can use to help your body be well. They can also give you a better sense of well-being and serenity.
For the purposes of this article, I will say that we are going to use grape seed oil as the carrier. It is light and easily absorbed if you decide to put these blends on your skin. If you decide to diffuse the oil blend, you will not need the carrier oil because the water acts as the carrier in that capacity.
Each of these blends will have a top note, middle note, and a bottom note. The first oil in each recipe is the lower note. The reason for this is because it tends to be the stronger smelling oil of the notes listed.
Sleep Blend:
This is a fabulous blend to help promote sleep and serenity.
- 10 Drops of Lavender Oil
- 5 Drops of Chamomile Oil (Roman or German is fine. It is all up to your preference)
- 2 Drops of Sage Oil
Drop the lavender oil into an amber bottle after putting about 1.5 to 2 ounces of the carrier oil in the bottle first. From there, add the 5 drops of Chamomile and shake well. I usually shake it for about 20 strokes before continuing. Finally, add the 2 drops of sage oil and shake again. Once blended you can keep it in the bottle for quite a while. Also, keep it in a cool dry place.
The Anti-Slump/Pick me Up Blend:
This recipe is one that I use when I need a pick me up at the office or at home. It combines citrus and peppermint oils for their energizing properties. Are you ready?
- 5 drops of lemon oil
- 3 drops of peppermint oil
- 1 drop of orange oil
As with the first recipe, start with the carrier oil and then add the oils separately. Shake well before adding the additional oils.
The Autumn/Thanksgiving Blend:
With the holidays coming up, this blend is wonderful to diffuse if you have the proper device. My mom whipped this up for the fall season and it was amazing.
- 8 drops of clove oil
- 5 drops of orange oil
- 3 drops of nutmeg oil
The Holiday Blend:
This is a blend, especially for Christmas. It can be a wonderful one to diffuse as well. The nice thing about this blend is that it can be used to kick your holiday spirit into high gear. Sounds fun right?!
- 6 drops of cinnamon oil
- 4 drops of pine oil
- 1-2 drops of clove oil
The Fun/Balancing Blend:
My final blend is for those who are looking for another fun way to use the oils. It takes a few of my favorite oils and blends them into an amazing smell!
- 6 drops of lavender oil
- 5 drops of sage oil
- 2 drops of sandalwood oil
This blend combines not just my favorite oils for their smell, but the balancing and the cleansing effect they can have on you are fantastic!
